The Abagana Civic Centre was filled to the brim on Monday, 9th March, 2026, as the Abagana Welfare Union, Women’s Wing celebrated this year’s International Women’s Day with a call on women to work towards developing and equipping themselves properly.
The celebration that featured empowering conversations, health talks, community protection, and cultural displays, had, “Give to Gain, Women Grow”, as its theme.
In her opening remarks, the host and the Community Women’s Leader, Prof. Ebele Josephine Emengini, while commending those in attendance, said, ‘Today, we gather to celebrate International Women’s Day, a day set aside globally to recognize the strength, resilience, and invaluable contributions of women to society.
‘For us here in Abagana, it is also a moment of reflection, appreciation, and renewed commitment to the progress of our families, our community, and our nation.’
The community leader said Abagana women had always been pillars of strength, noting that from the earliest days of their community, women had played vital roles in nurturing families, sustaining their culture, promoting peace and supporting development.
According to her, ‘Our mothers and grandmothers built homes with wisdom and sacrifice, and today, we continue to uphold that noble legacy. International Women’s Day reminds us that the role of women goes far beyond the home.
‘Women today are leaders, professionals, entrepreneurs, educators, and nation builders. In Abagana, our women are traders, teachers, civil servants, farmers, business owners, and community organizers. Through your hard work and dedication, you contribute immensely to the growth and stability of our society.
‘However, this celebration is not only about acknowledging our achievements; it is also about encouraging one another to rise higher. As women, we must continue to support one another, mentor our younger generation, and promote education, integrity, and unity among ourselves.
‘When women stand together with a common purpose, communities flourish and the future becomes brighter. Let us also remember the importance of empowering our daughters.
‘Education, skill acquisition, and moral upbringing are powerful tools that will enable them to face the challenges of the modern world with confidence. As mothers and leaders, we must guide them to become responsible citizens who will carry forward the good name of Abagana.
‘Furthermore, I urge us all to strengthen the spirit of cooperation among Abagana Women. Let us continue to work together in peace, love, and mutual respect. By supporting community initiatives, caring for the vulnerable among us, and participating actively in development efforts, we can build a stronger and more prosperous Abagana.
‘On this special occasion, I commend every woman present here, for the sacrifices you make daily for your families and for our community. Your resilience, patience, and dedication are the backbone of our society.
‘As we celebrate today, may we renew our commitment to unity, empowerment, and service. Let us continue to uplift one another and inspire the next generation of women leaders who will take Abagana to greater heights. May God bless all the Women of Abagana. May He bless our families and our beloved community. Happy International Women’s Day to us all,’ she concluded.
